چکیده

Habitat fragmentation is widely considered a primary threat to biodiversity. In this paper, we analyze incentive-based policies designed to reduce forest fragmentation in the coastal plain region of South Carolina. Our approach integrates an econometric model of land use with simulations that predict the spatial pattern of land-use change. We analyze how subsidies for afforestation affect distributions defined over fragmentation metrics and derive the marginal costs of altering landscape pattern. We find that the costs of reducing fragmentation vary greatly with initial landscape conditions and that a simple uniform subsidy appears to perform well relative to a more complicated spatially-targeted policy.

Policies to Reduce Forest Fragmentation: Combining Econometric Models with GIS-Based Landscape Simulations

Forest fragmentation is a primary threat to terrestrial biodiversity. We combine a parcel-level econometric model of land-use transitions with spatially-explicit landscape simulations to predict the empirical distribution of fragmentation outcomes under given market conditions and policy scenarios. Our model explains transitions between forest, agricultural, and urban uses, allowing us to model...

Market-Based Policies to Reduce Forest Fragmentation and Risks to Interior-Forest Birds

Forest fragmentation occurs when a contiguous patch of forest is transformed into disjunct patches. This reduces the quality of habitat for bird species of ecological and recreational importance, and is considered to be a primary cause of declines in the populations of many migratory songbirds. In this paper, we analyze the effects of market-based policies on forest fragmentation in the coastal...

Integration assessment of Protected Rangeland habitats using landscape ecological approach

The management of areas with landscape ecological approach helps us to have more integrated of considering completely management and also keep the area’s values. Lar National Park and Varjin Protected Area are the most important areas of their biodiversity and wildlife habitats. The aim of this study was quantification of fragmentation in Lar National Park and Varjin Protected Area and to compa...

A Data-Based Conservation Planning Tool for Florida Panthers

Habitat loss and fragmentation are the greatest threats to the endangered Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi). We developed a data-based habitat model and userfriendly interface so that land managers can objectively evaluate Florida panther habitat. We used a geographic information system (GIS) and the Mahalanobis distance statistic (D) to develop a model based on broad-scale landscape charac...

Understanding the genetic effects of recent habitat fragmentation in the context of evolutionary history: phylogeography and landscape genetics of a southern California endemic Jerusalem cricket (Orthoptera: Stenopelmatidae: Stenopelmatus).

Habitat loss and fragmentation due to urbanization are the most pervasive threats to biodiversity in southern California. Loss of habitat and fragmentation can lower migration rates and genetic connectivity among remaining populations of native species, reducing genetic variability and increasing extinction risk. However, it may be difficult to separate the effects of recent anthropogenic fragm...
